An Ulverston creator could be rubbing shoulders with stars of the screen after a film she wrote was nominated for a prestigious BAFTA. Kerry Kolbe, who is a director at film-making charity Signal Film and Media which is based in the town, has secured a place on the top-three shortlist for the BAFTA gong for best British short animation . She was the writer behind The Fire Next Time, an animated short film inspired by the 2011 London Riots. Kerry said she was delighted by the nomination. “It is really exciting, she said. Over the Moon and The Willoughbys, both of which have fallen out of the race. So has the sixth longlisted film, Dreamworks Animation’s The Croods: A New Age. In recent years, Disney hasn’t dominated this category as decisively as at the Oscars or Golden Globes: it has won the BAFTA in two of the last six years. But this is the first time since 2014 that it has accounted for the majority of the nominees, and Soul, fresh from winning at the Globes, goes into this award as the favorite. Today, we have an exciting announcement here at Rotoscopers. This Thursday, January 28th, begins the annual Sundance Film Festival, which normally takes place in Park City, Utah. However, this year, the festival is taking place virtually via an online festival. To celebrate the festival, we are interviewing as many of the animators, both for shorts and features, as we possibly can. This year, at the festiva,l there are nine shorts and two features, e.g., one documentary and one dramatic feature. Features Cryptozoo – directed by Dash Shaw who previously created My Entire High School is Sinking into the Sea. This film tells the story of a couple that stumble upon a zoo of cryptids or unicorns. ....

When the Sundance Film Festival kicks off on January 28, 2021, in Park City, Utah, there won’t be a long line of people standing outside the Eccles Theater, watching their breath catch in the cold winter air and Main Street surely won’t be packed with revelers and sponsor activations, either. Instead, on account of the coronavirus pandemic, next year’s Sundance will actually expand amid the contraction of live events. Rather than relying solely on in-person experiences, the festival has plans that extend far beyond the theater: a digital platform where patrons around the world can watch this year’s lineup; drive-in screenings at venues around the country; in-person showings at independent art houses nationwide where indoor events can happen safely and in accordance with public health guidelines; and even a virtual reality space that includes live performances and a lobby where people can digitally congregate. ....
