NEW DELHI: The central government on Saturday allocated supply of Remdesivir to 19 States/Union Territories with a high burden of Covid-19 cases. The escalation of serious Covid-19 patients in hospitals for effective clinical management has also resulted in an increase in the demand of Remdesivir. While the States have been advised to promote the judicious use of the drug which is listed as an Investigational Therapy by the ministry, they have also been advised to take action against possible hoarding and black marketing of the drug, reads a health ministry release.

In view of the pandemic situation in the country and a boosted demand for crucial drugs to treat coronavirus, Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on Friday informed that the production of Remdesivir is being ramped up and very soon 3 lakh vials per day capacity will be achieved. Remdesivir production capacity is now ramped up to more than 90 lakhs vials per month, earlier it was 40 lakhs vials per month. Very soon, 3 lakh vials per day will be produced, tweeted Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya.

Union health minister Harsh Vardhan said production of Bharat Biotech s COVID-19 vaccine Covaxin will rise 10 times by September. He added that remdesivir manufacturing will be doubled to 74.1 lakh each month by May. He said steps are being taken to increase the basket of vaccines available. Coronavirus vaccine supplies for small states are being replenished in a week, whereas, for big states, it is every four days.

Nationalist Congress Party minister Nawab Malik has alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party is involved in the mismanagement of supply of Covid drug Remdesivir in Maharashtra. This comes after BJP leaders Devendra Fadnavis and Pravin Darekar got involved in the police investigation of Remdesivir supplier Rajesh Dokania on Saturday.

The demand for Remdesivir, an injectable medicine, has soared manifold amid skyrocketing coronavirus cases in the country. Amid reports of several states pressing the alarm button over the acute shortage of the key antiviral drug, manufacturers have now decided to reduce the price.Â
Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilizers DV Sadananda Gowda on Friday said that major manufacturers of Remdisivir have reduced the price considerably. On Govtâs intervention, major manufacturers of Remdesivir have voluntarily reduced its MRP ranging from Rs 5400 to less than Rs 3500 by 15.04.2021. This will support PM @narendramodi s efforts to fight #COVID19, Gowda said in his tweet.
