Authorities, but no assassination against the president. thanks. also this morning, it could be the beginning of the end of the 107-day long nightmare for people living and working along the gulf coast. bp announcing overnight that the static kill operation to seal the leaking oil well for good is working. heavy drilling mud was pumped into the well for eight hours. and another major sign of progress, a report this morning in the new york times claiming that the national oceanic and atmospheric association says the oil spill is essentially under control, that 75% has either evaporated, dispersed or been captured in other ways. the white house also talked about the end game a short time ago on american morning. we definitely are making progress, but oil hasn t been leaking for some time. the static kill is going well. but ultimately, it s the reliefwells that we ordered drilled that will be the final ....
In the well-being filled with mud. we now have equalized the pressure the hydro static pressure of the sea water with the pressure inside the capping stack. and basically have reached a static condition in the well that allows us to have high confidence that there will be no oil leaking into the environment, and we have significantly improved our chances to finally kill the well with the reliefwells when that does occur. the discussions that are going on today between the science team down in houston and the bp engineers are regarding whether or not we should follow up the mud that has been put into the well bore with actual cement. and the discussion around that revolves around what we think the status of the drill pipe is. is it still where we thought it was? because where that drill pipe is consequential in how you will put the cement in and the success of the cement. those discussions are ongoing and we will not make a until we know what the drill pipe is ....
Welcome back. bp says it has capped off that well in the gulf of mexico, and it looks like it s holding. as you can see in these live pictures, no oil is gushing right now. bp stopped the oil flow yesterday afternoon and it is now about halfway through a tense waiting period in which engineers are watching pressure gauges for signs of a leak. even if the new containment cap holds, remember, now, this is only a temporary fix. it s hoped that reliefwells now in the process of being drilled will finally kill that blown-out we will well. and for breaks, nbc s michelle ganzen franzen joins us from pensacola beach. how are they reacting to the somewhat positive news about this cap? well, it is positive news on the whole scale. you ve got no oil coming out temporarily, but if you still take a look here at the beach, there s not a lot of people out there, tamron, as you mentioned. and that will be a problem in the months to come, even though they may get this cap under ....
