OAKLAND, Calif. - Members of the Oakland City Council Public Safety Committee voted Tuesday to seek the full council s input on the recommendations of Reimagining Public Safety Taskforce rather than approving them.
Committee members made their decision late Tuesday afternoon and hope to have the full council provide input at a special meeting May 4. That meeting has not been scheduled officially.
At least a dozen community members spoke in favor of the recommendations and/or those favored by the Anti Police-Terror Project and Defund Police Coalition. Those recommendations may reduce the Police Department s budget. Police, on the other hand, wonder why the City Council is talking about reducing the police budget given that the city has seen more than three times the number of homicides this year compared with last year.    ....

Just beneath the bustling Nimitz Freeway, there’s hundreds of them. Maybe even thousands.
They’re gutted and stripped, covered in graffiti, burned to pieces and exploding with trash. Oakland’s swaths of abandoned vehicles are an unsightly urban phenomenon, and just parallel to Wood Street, which is home to sprawling tent encampments, there’s an astonishing amount of them.
Just ahead, two people can be seen stripping a rusty truck that’s been reduced to a frame on wheels. The area, which feels like something out of a post-apocalyptic John Carpenter film, is cluttered with AC Transit buses, bombed-out BMWs and overturned Audis. But how did they get here? And more importantly, why is the city allowing them to accumulate? ....

UC Berkeley faculty, community leaders discuss police reform in town hall

Faculty and community leaders came together to discuss police reform and budget reduction in a Tuesday conversation co-sponsored by the Goldman School of Public Policy and UC Berkeley Social Science Matrix.
The conversation is part of the campus Reimagining Democracy Town Hall series, which seeks to increase public access to UC Berkeley’s expertise and contribute to timely political conversations. Tuesday’s town hall aimed to address police reform in the wake of national protests, particularly in response to the murder of George Floyd.
“There’s less agreement on the meaning of what could or should be abolished or defunded or what can be meaningfully reformed,” said Dan Lindheim, campus public policy adjunct professor, during the event. “This has advanced, as well as complicated, the crucial debate about the appropriate role of police and policing in our society.” ....
