Lived with decades of people attributing poll testing to hillary. i ve got to say working on health care for all in 1994 certainly wasn t poll tested. she s been attacked by the right for a variety of positions she s taken. that s not poll tested. bill clinton passed nafta. if she runs for president, i hope all commentators will judge her on what she s putting forward. i worked for her for a decade. in the 2007-2008 campaign her economic program was focused on inequality before inequality was vogue. she talked about ceo pay in her campaign, talked about how ceo pay was running away from worker pay. she actually proposed regulating derivatives in the fall of 2007 before anyone was talking about these issues, so i actually hope people will judge her on the policies she s put forward and ....

well, i can t do that. i think the answer is that there are some members of congress who are vegetables. and they were easily influenced to vote for it. here was the problem. the republicans for all their talk about openness took three separate appropriations bills, put them all together and didn t open any of them to amendment. so we had the bill for the departments of housing and transportation, we had the bill from the department of agriculture, and one other, my rick perry moment they put them all three together. i forget which was the third. but the problem was we didn t have a chance to vote yes or no. and there were some very important things in the hud bill for the districts i represent. on the other hand, frankly, far worse to me than the redefinition of tomato paste was that they deliberately reduced the funding that we need for the commodities futures trading commission which is the regulator of derivatives. now, the republicans wanted to give them unbelievably less money ....

On both sides of the equation. somewhere in america, you have to stand up for the if i had you shall he usufiduciary responsibility of being honest with customers. we re saying after four or five attempts to regulate derivatives the majority republicans always voted against regulating derivatives. in fact it was republicans who led the charge to take out the oversight regulators of this market and say, stand on the sidelines. we clearly want to get the referee back in the game. we want somebody paying attention to these dark markets as soon as possible. may i ask while you re talking about drive tivtion there was a deal negotiated on derivatives by the female head of a committee blanch lincoln. it s reported you said subsequent to her decision there was some sexism in the way it was handled from there. that senator dodd and secretary of treasury didn t incorporate her ideas and meet with her. do you still believe there s a problem with sexism? ....

Right? we ll do what we do with casinos. we don t close them down, we govern ement them. there s a camera on top of every table. there s a pit boss. if you ve got rules then play your slightly risky game, but let us see when your risky game doesn t just affect those entities that christine talked about, but could in the case of aig or lehman brothers or bear stearns affect every last one of us and our ability to keep our job because our company couldn t get credit at the highest levels and had to lay us off. that s the problem. we ve had many chances to do this and president bill clinton, for example, on abc s this week with jake tapper, he said i got bad advice from robert rubin and from larry summers about regulating derivatives and that was a mistake. i mean, i have been covering derivatives since the her job title was derivatives reporter. derivatives reporter and since i was a cub we ve been talking about derivatives and could they be dangerous? and the ticking time bomb ....

what would be those top three things in that bill? first thing we have to deal with too big to fail. we absolutely have to deal with too big to fail. we also should be dealing with the regulations, making the laws and not leaving it to the regulators. when this happened in 1929, we passed a whole series of legislation, glass-steagall act. margin requirements. we set the the fdic. that was by law. and it worked pretty well for about 50 years. then we started chipping away at it. really got rolling in 1999 when we did away with glass-stegall. didn t do the things we could have done in regulating derivatives. those are the kind of things that happened. we have to make sure we don t have anything that s too big to fail. right now professor simon from m.i.t. pointed out that right now the top six banks, their assets are 67% of the gross domestic product, ....
