Impressions from a visit to Mekelle, Tigray
Food is the highest priority in the camps for internally displaced persons (IDP) in Mekelle. The number of those spontaneously set up camps has grown from 14 at the end of March to a total of 21 by mid-April with IDPs arriving every day. This is particularly concerning due to the high concentration of pregnant women, nursing mothers and very young children.
Almost six months into the crisis, most of the IDPs are still dependent on the generosity of people and churches in Mekelle for food. This is commendable, but we must move towards a situation where they can prepare their own meals. That way families with small children can make sure they eat early in ....

On 4 November 2020, clashes erupted between the military and regional forces in the Tigray region of northern Ethiopia. The federal government declared a state of emergency for six months, and a large-scale humanitarian crisis emerged with a surge of internally displaced persons and movement of refugees into neighboring countries. Despite the announcement of an official end to military operations at the end of November 2020, there has been continued conflict across the region and insecurity particularly in Tigray, Afar and Amhara regions with significant impact on the safety and protection of civilians. After several months of restricted movement due to insecurity and on-going clashes, particularly in remote rural areas, unfettered access was granted by the Federal Government on 3 March1 to humanitarian actors to operate in the area. The access situation in Tigray is fluid and constantly changing. Despite recent improvements in access, active conflict in various areas this week restricted humanitarian response.
In addition to insecurity, humanitarian partners continue to flag challenges with capacity and resources to be able to scale up to the level needed to respond across Tigray.
Security permitting, humanitarian partners with the capacity and resources to expand into rural areas are looking at how to reach areas where no assistance has yet been provided.
The Government of Ethiopia is working to reach six Woredas that have not received any food assistance, targeting approximately 300,000 people. Women and girls caught in the conflict continue to fall victims of sexual violence and abuse. ....
