After a years-long campaign, lawmakers on Thursday unveiled a proposal to create a paid family and medical leave program, drawing support from Mainers across the state who argued that it is long past time for such a policy. The proposal would allow employees to take up to 12 weeks of leave after the birth of a baby, to care for an adopted or foster child, or if they or a loved on has a serious health condition. Victims of sexual assault or domestic violence could also take leave.
