this morning the olympic committee responds. newsroom begins right now. good morning. happy friday 13th. i m carol costello. we begin this hour with a very bad day for the nation s biggest banks. jpmorgan chase and its ceo jamie dimon are opening their books and telling us just how much money the firm lost in a bunch of risky trades. the blunder stunned the financial world and fueled more debate on whether banking regulations are tough enough. alison kosik is at the new york stock exchange and has been listening to a jpmorgan conference call this morning. alison, what have you heard? if you re totalling up the losses so far this year from those trading losses from the risky trades, what it adds up to is $5.8 billion. that s almost triple what was originally thought. but jamie dimon said they could get bigger by another $1.7 billion. keep in mind just because the trades were discovered and announced to everybody, you know, they can t just suddenly be stopped. so wh ....
mohammed is watching from neighboring lebanon, and he joins us live. good to see you. what can you tell us about the latest violence? well, syrian opposition activists told us today that they are begging the international community for their help, for their intervention, after this barbaric massacre, that s what they re calling it, that happened yesterday in the town in homs province. now, they described intense shelling, mortars raining down on the town, and then as you mentioned, they said the pro regime militias went in and started indiscriminantly slaughtering men, women, and children. we have seen gruesome, stubbing videos today. what we have heard from opposition activists corroborate what we have seen on the videos. women and children in blankets on the floors of rooms in houses. we have seen horrible videos of children which they appear that their heads have been bashed in, their lifeless bodies strewn across floors in the houses. horrifyi horrifying. we know ....
reports of the massacre that s gone on now. all right, that was mohammed reporting on the violence in syria. egyptian voters may have to wait another month to learn who their next president will be. two candidates seem likely to face off in a runoff next month. mohammed moracy on the left is a member of the muslim brotherhood. the other served before as prime minister under hosni mubarak. it s not an easy choice for egyptians starved for democracy. jimmy carter is in cairo where he s leading a delegation of observers. he said it s no surprise not everyone is happy with the results. with 13 candidates in the race, obviously, a lot of disappointed people here, but now, both sides are beginning to call in the others, inyoung people and other groups to try to induce their support in the future. both of the potential candidates are moved to the center and trying to consolidate support by asking the people who didn t support them in the past. overall, mr. carter said ....
