SolarWinds Orion: Fixes Aim to Block Sunburst and Supernova

Kevin Thompson, president and CEO of SolarWinds, in a video message to customers about the attack
Security software vendor SolarWinds has updated multiple versions of its Orion network monitoring platform to remove the Sunburst backdoor that was added to its code as part of a massive supply chain attack. The updates also block Supernova malware that attackers installed by exploiting a flaw in Orion. But incident response experts have warned that full cleanup may take years.
SolarWinds asks all Orion platform customers to update their Orion platform software as soon as possible to help ensure the security of your environment, the company said in a recently issued security advisory. ....

CISA Warns SolarWinds Incident Response May Be Substantial

Federal, state and local governments are among the many victims of the supply chain attack that backdoored the SolarWinds Orion network-monitoring software, and victims may need to rebuild all network assets being monitored by the software, the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency warns.
The U.S. probe into the attack, which is being led by CISA and the FBI, has found that government agencies of all sizes have been impacted.
CISA is tracking a significant cyber incident impacting enterprise networks across federal, state and local governments, as well as critical infrastructure entities and other private sector organizations, according to a SolarWinds Orion update CISA issued Wednesday. ....

Location of organizations that Microsoft has identified as having been exploited via second-stage attacks as part of the SolarWinds Orion supply chain attack
Hackers who infiltrated government and business networks via a stealthy software update appear to have genuinely impacted about 50 organizations, says FireEye CEO Kevin Mandia.
Speaking of the supply chain attack that implanted a backdoor in the Orion network monitoring software built by Texas-based SolarWinds, and which was pushed to 18,000 of the firm s customers, Mandia noted that, while many have been referring to it as potentially the biggest intrusion in our history, the focus of the apparent cyberespionage campaign was much more targeted. ....

SolarWinds Supply Chain Hit: Victims Include Cisco, Intel

The FBI, CISA and the ODNI are leading the U.S. government s response to the apparent cyberespionage operation that backdoored the widely used SolarWinds Orion network monitoring software.
American technology giants Cisco and Intel are among the thousands of organizations that have been affected by the supply chain attack targeting software vendor SolarWinds and, by extension, its customers.
The attack campaign, which was first revealed Sunday by FireEye, one of its victims, centers on the Orion network monitoring software from SolarWinds, a technology firm based in Austin, Texas, that until recently had a valuation of about $1 billion.
While SolarWinds may be relatively unknown, the company has 300,000 customers, of which nearly 18,000 may have been caught up in the supply chain attack, which involved attackers adding a backdoor to the company s Orion software, apparently by having infiltrated its software development pipeline (see: ....
