Sen. Hinkins discusses his vote against OHV curfew bill

Grand County residents have been eagerly watching the progress at the state capitol of Senate Bill 168, which would have allowed resort communities in Utah to impose a curfew on OHV use on municipal streets between the hours of 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. Many residents hoped the bill would give Moab City a tool to reduce excessive noise from the popular vehicles; others see UTVs as being unfairly targeted by the proposed legislation, and urge officials to instead enforce existing regulations that apply to all vehicles to address ongoing noise complaints. The bill, which was introduced by Sen. Mike McKell (R-District 7), failed in the Senate in a 14-15 vote on Feb. 24. ....

An eye on the capitol

The Utah State Legislature is two weeks into their 2021 General Session, and local elected officials are making an effort to keep track of the bills likely to affect Grand County and to make local concerns heard at the state capitol.
At the regular Feb. 2 meeting of the Grand County Commission, County Attorney Christina Sloan spoke about six state bills, with recommendations that the commission take a formal stance in support or opposition for each.
While Grand County contracts with the lobbying firm Red Hill Strategic to help advance Grand Countyâs interests with legislators, commissioners agreed that active involvement from elected officials will help ensure state legislators are familiar with Grand Countyâs needs and willing to listen to its representatives.
