The hill on behalf of an acting attorney general whitaker. and it made a point of saying, you know, nothing has changed at doj. rod rosenstein is still in charge of the mueller investigation. but at the same time, the acting attorney general has declined to recu recuse, and that means he can step in at any moment in time. so on the one hand, he s trying to pacify us and tell us, you know, nothing to look at here. move along. but at the same time, we know he s a threat to the investigation. a threat we shouldn t ignore at this point. mike schmidt, donald trump said to you in an interview about a year ago that this is exactly what he wanted. he has been very open about the fact that the attorney general is someone whose most important thing is to be working for him. to be loyal to him. everything else following the rule of law, guidelines, that s less important. we saw that a month into his presidency when he tried to stop jeff sessions from recusing himself from the russia ....
He may claim executive privilege for those. ari melber, i think this is a first. an attorney general appearing on a topic about which he is recused. it is awkward, to say the least. it is legally difficult for him to walk this line, although according to the justice department and the trump white house, he now does want to walk this line because he wants to at least address some of these things. i think if we take a step back and actually put the legalese to the side, jim comey told a story last week, and it was a story about lies, as he put it, defamation, as he put it, and a white house led by a president who did not respect the rule of law and the traditions thereof. he didn t say whether that lack of respect delved into criminal conduct. he said he would stay out of the way. i think what it is up to jeff sessions to do today is to tell his side of the story, which what we ve been told, what we expect, is about a plan who did recu recuse, who did try to get out ....
Overseeing an investigation. let s listen in. you cannot have somebody, a friend of mine, jeff sessions, on the campaign and who is an appoint appointee. you re going to need to use the special prosecutors statute in office to take not just to re z recu recuse, but you do have to do that. we re going to have to do it. all right, tom, your reaction to that. what do you think? should there be sexes recussion recusing him or a special investigation? you know, i think this whole thing should back up a little bit and try to find perspective. for example, you know, the reason i think that the white house is so particularly upset about the whole aspect of accusations that trump campaign officials were meeting with russian intelligence on a regular basis, it isn t just political anymore. it isn t just a distraction. ....
At one point the prosecution the defense arguing that it was marilyn mosby s own words on may 1 when she talked about no justice no peace and made those words and said those words that the entire word said, that those words tainted the jury pool, that she took aside, that she was giving her opinion on whether or not those police officers were guilty or innocent. the judge threw all that out saying that was a probable cause statement, it was public knowledge and that is something that the state s attorney certainly had the right to say. the one thing the judge did take issue with was the state s attorney during the question-and-and period of that press conference saying that all the police officers had given statements during the course of the investigation. that, he said, she should have known better on. with regard to the motion to recu recuse, the defense lawyers had a litany of issues that her husband represents the district that was affected by the riots ....
Sessions seems to be rebuffing the suggestion that he might resign. the president criticized his recusal. the president saying the decision was unfair to the president. and that president trump wouldn t have asked him to become attorney general if he knew sessions would remove himself from overseeing the investigation. of course, those comments drew a lot of speculation. white house deputy press secretary sarah huckabee sanders has clarified, in part, saying the president does have confidence in sessions. but really was just disappointed in the decision sessions made to recu recuse. clearly he has confidence in him or he would not be the attorney general. i think you know this president enough to know that if he wanted somebody to take an action, he would make that quite clear. christine and miguel? thank you, jessica. with that in mind, the president is resufling the legal team ....
