NASHVILLE (BP) Some SBC annual meetings offer little speculation as to the outcomes of the election of officers. The 2021 annual meeting in Nashville will not be one of those.
With just a few weeks left until official nominations are made, multiple nominees have been announced for various SBC-related offices.
So far, there are four announced candidates for SBC president, five for vice president roles, and one each for recording secretary and registration secretary.

Citing a desire for Southern Baptists’ focus to “be on the mission, with the Bible as our sole and final authority on all matters,” Northwest Baptist Convention Executive Director/Treasurer Randy Adams announced Jan. 20  he would be nominated for SBC president. ....

Prominent black academic nominated to 1st vice president of SBC

An African-American seminary dean has been nominated as a candidate for first vice president of the Southern Baptist Convention, a denomination founded by slave-owners.
According to a statement shared with The Christian Post on Tuesday evening, Lee Brand, Jr., vice president and dean of the Mid-America Baptist Theological Seminary of Memphis, Tennessee, was nominated for the position.
According to Article V of the Southern Baptist Convention s Constitution, the denomination officers include a first vice president and a second vice president.
“In case of death or disability of the president, the vice presidents shall automatically succeed to the office of president in the order of their election,”explains the SBC Constitution. ....

The Southern Baptist Convention’s first and only black president, Fred Luter, has nominated Alabama Pastor Ed Litton to become the denomination’s next president, setting up a brewing ideological clash on race with prominent candidate and seminary head Albert Mohler.
“I have known Ed Litton for over 20 years. Our relationship started when we preached for each other as part of the SBC Racial Reconciliation Sunday during the month of February,” Luter told the Baptist Press.
“From there, our relationship developed to more than just colleagues to bring races together. We both shared the hope of drawing people closer to a relationship with Jesus Christ and then growing disciples for Christ. In both of our churches, our focus has been the same all of these years.   ....

Two Pastors Join SBC President Race

Albert Mohler has new competition in the race to become the next president of the Southern Baptist Convention.
Two pastors, Ed Litton and Mike Stone, accepted upcoming nominations in the past week, each representing different emphases for the future of the SBC as the denomination grapples with an escalating debate over its approach to race.
Mohler has been in the running for over a year; the SBC canceled its previous election along with its 2020 annual meeting due to COVID-19.
Mohler is already a big name in the SBC. The president of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, he’s currently the longest-serving entity head in the denomination and regularly weighs in on current issues on his daily podcast, ....
