Minnesota School District Goes Remote After Racist 'Promposal' & Threats


After a racist “promposal” went viral Tuesday, a Minnesota school district has decided to go remote for the remainder of week following “a number of threats” toward students. 
The prom proposal featured a sign written by a white student that read “If I was Black I’d be picking cotton, but I’m white so I’m picking you. Prom?” The sign, which was posted to Facebook Tuesday, caused outrage within the school community and beyond on social media.
Given the attention of the racist viral photo, the Big Lake School District issued a statement, according to KARE 11, that it was “evaluating it under any and all applicable School District policies and will take whatever action is necessary and appropriate to address the situation.” Eventually the district said it addressed the student’s actions, but did not go into detail due to privacy concerns.  ....

BIG LAKE, Minn. Outside Big Lake High School the Hornets Way highlights the school’s core values made up of kindness and respect. 
However, those values aren’t what’s getting the attention.
It’s a viral promposal photo that’s putting the city of Big Lake and its high school on the map for all the wrong reasons.  ....

5 INVESTIGATES: Federal COVID-19 aid used to buy riot gear, 'civil unrest equipment'

As federal relief money flowed into local governments to help cover the costs of responding to the COVID-19 pandemic, several police departments in Minnesota spent emergency funding on riot gear, Tasers, body cameras and other civil unrest equipment.
5 INVESTIGATES identified the purchases in a review of more than 1,400 spending reports from cities, towns and counties, which detailed their use of funding received through the Coronavirus Aid Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act.
Those expenses could potentially be flagged during upcoming audits since the federal government made it clear that such funding could only be used to cover expenditures due to the public health emergency. ....
