Former Jawaharlal Nehru University student leader Kanhaiya Kumar and nine others are set to face trial in the 2016 sedition case after a court in Delhi on Monday took cognisance of the chargesheet filed against them, and summoned the accused on March 15, reported
The Indian Express. The action came a year after the Delhi government gave the sanction to prosecute the accused.
“The sanction to prosecute accused persons has already been filed by the Home Department, GNCT [Delhi government], dated February 27, 2020,” Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Pankaj Sharma of the Patiala House Courts said. “After careful perusal of the chargesheet and consideration of the material, all the accused persons are summoned to face trial and they have been summoned through investigation officer for March 15, 2021.” ....

New Delhi:Â Five years later, Kanhaiya Kumar, Umar Khalid and others who had faced sedition charges for a 2016 event on the Jawaharlal Nehru University campus will be facing trial and have been summoned by a Delhi court. The Delhi Police received sanction to prosecute from the Delhi government last year.
The police chargesheet has claimed that Kumar and others led the procession in which “seditious” slogans were chanted. Other accused include Anirban Bhattacharya, Aquib Hussain, Mujeeb Hussain Gattoo, Muneeb Hussain Gattoo, Umar Gul, Rayees Rasool, Basharat Ali and Khalid Bashir Bhatt. ....

2016 JNU sedition case: Delhi court summons Kanhaiya and nine others

A Delhi court has taken cognizance of a chargesheet filed by Delhi Police against former Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) president Kanhaiya Kumar and nine others in a 2016 sedition case.
Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Pankaj Sharma also summoned all 10 accused in the case to appear before the court on March 15, the next date of hearing.
The court’s order came almost a year after Delhi government gave its nod to police to prosecute Mr. Kumar and nine others for their involvement in a procession where they had allegedly supported seditious slogans raised on the varsity’s campus during an event on February 9, 2016. ....
