The legislation would allow farmers to sell unpasteurized cow and goat milk directly to consumers. However, the law would limit raw milk sales to an average of 500 gallons per month.
Under the new law, retailers can sell raw milk in the state as long as the container is clearly labeled as “unpasteurized raw milk,” and includes the name and physical address of the seller, the date of production, and the following warning: “Consuming unpasteurized raw milk may increase your risk of foodborne illness, especially for children, elderly, immunocompromised individuals, and persons with certain medical conditions.”
A bill filed in the Louisiana House would legalize limited raw milk sales in the state, taking an important step toward nullifying a federal prohibition scheme in practice and effect.
