KeNHA Closes Section of Historic Mombasa Bridge After Emergency
Motorists stuck in a traffic jam at Kibarani on the Makupa Causeway.
The Kenya National Highways Authority (KENHA) has closed a section of the Makupa Causeway bridge which connects Mombasa Island to the Kenyan mainland.
In a notice issued on Tuesday, March 16, the authority stated that the Changamwe bound direction from Mombasa Island would be closed to motorists between March 16, and Wednesday, March 17.
The closure was as a result of repair works from an undisclosed emergency situation.
All traffic shall be diverted to the Mombasa island-bound traffic carriageway to allow the necessary repair works. ....

Government agencies have put in place measures to ensure the safety of pedestrians and smooth shipping at the new Likoni floating footbridge in Mombasa County.
Principal Secretary for Shipping and Maritime Affairs Nancy Karigithu urged shipping lines to acknowledge that there was now a bridge at Likoni and embrace the project to ensure safety.
She made the appeal at the weekend when she toured the Sh1.9 billion bridge that was officially opened on January 1, this year. ....

Likoni ferry transport has witnessed heated politics for over two decades. However, this could finally ebb following the opening of the Likoni floating footbridge for public use on Friday.
Although considered a stop-gap measure to reduce congestion at the Likoni channel crossing, the Sh1.9 billion pedestrian bridge is seen as the first step after years of seeking an alternative mode of transport between Mombasa Island and the South Coast.
The new bridge, which is expected to operate for five years, was a result of intense consultation between President Uhuru Kenyatta and Mombasa County leadership, led by Governor Hassan Joho, as they sought a solution to the congested Likoni ferry channel amid the Covid-19 pandemic. ....

Summary
President said when the bridge is opened to the public, congestion at the Likoni Channel would be a thing of the past.
The bridge is 1.2 kilometre and stretches from Liwatoni Liwatoni in Mombasa Island to Ras Bofu (Peleleza) in Likoni.
The bridge will be demobilised at least an hour before to allow ships that are entering or leaving the Mombasa to pass. ....

President Uhuru Kenyatta on Thursday unveiled three development projects in Mombasa County.
The first project on the President s busy diary was the commissioning of the local assembly of the Malaysian Proton Saga saloon cars at the Associated Vehicle Assemblers (AVA) in Miritini, Mombasa County.
Addressing AVA employees, President Kenyatta applauded Simba Corporation, the Proton franchise holder in Kenya and all other assemblers for supporting the Government’s agenda to revive the local vehicle assembly industry to support wealth and employment creation for the Kenyan youth.
“My joy is that we are commissioning the revival of the assembling of saloon cars in your factory after a 25-year hiatus. With this, we are celebrating the return of saloon vehicle assembly here at AVA in Mombasa and I want to congratulate all those involved,” the Head of State said. ....
