KeNHA Closes Section of Historic Mombasa Bridge After Emergency Motorists stuck in a traffic jam at Kibarani on the Makupa Causeway. The Kenya National Highways Authority (KENHA) has closed a section of the Makupa Causeway bridge which connects Mombasa Island to the Kenyan mainland. In a notice issued on Tuesday, March 16, the authority stated that the Changamwe bound direction from Mombasa Island would be closed to motorists between March 16, and Wednesday, March 17. The closure was as a result of repair works from an undisclosed emergency situation. All traffic shall be diverted to the Mombasa island-bound traffic carriageway to allow the necessary repair works. ....

However, this could finally ebb following the opening of the Likoni floating footbridge for public use on Friday. Although considered a stop-gap measure to reduce congestion at the Likoni channel crossing, the Sh1.9 billion pedestrian bridge is seen as the first step after years of seeking an alternative mode of transport between Mombasa Island and the South Coast. The new bridge, which is expected to operate for five years, was a result of intense consultation between President Uhuru Kenyatta and Mombasa County leadership, led by Governor Hassan Joho, as they sought a solution to the congested Likoni ferry channel amid the Covid-19 pandemic. ....
