BEIRUT, Feb. 7 (Xinhua) Hana Harb, a Lebanese housewife, now has to be very selective in making her weekly purchase at the supermarket since the unprecedented increase in food prices in the country does not allow her a loose budget.
I go to the supermarket every week to buy some basic food products to feed my kids at the lowest possible cost as my salary lost its value with the increase in the U.S. dollar price, Harb told Xinhua.
Harb, a mother of three, works as a school teacher with a monthly income of 1.5 million Lebanese pounds, an equivalent of only 175 dollars when calculated at the black market rate of about 8,500 pounds against one dollar, despite the official rate at banks of 1,515. ....

What's fuelling Lebanon's lockdown protests?


Lebanon has recorded 293,157 coronavirus cases and 2,621 deaths since February last year.
This month it recorded one of the world’s steepest per-capita surges in infections, forcing authorities to impose a full lockdown until February 8.
The restrictions include a round-the-clock curfew, with grocery shopping only allowed through deliveries.
With day labourers making up around half of Lebanon’s workforce, the restrictions have prompted alarm.
“We are very concerned that vulnerable families and their children will be left to deal with a catastrophe on their own,” the Save the Children charity has said.
To ease the burden, the World Bank has approved emergency aid worth $246 million to help 786,000 Lebanese. ....
