Japan draws tough assignments for Tokyo Olympic basketball tournament

Japan’s men’s and women’s basketball teams will face a stiff challenge during the preliminary round of this summer Tokyo Games after being given a tough road during the draw for the Olympic tournaments on Tuesday.
The host country’s male squad was placed into Group C along with Spain and Argentina, the finalists of the 2019 FIBA World Cup in China. The final spot in the group will be filled by the winner of one of the four qualifying tournaments taking place in four nations from June 29 to July 4. The Group C qualifier will come from the tournament being held in Kaunas, Lithuania. ....

Sunflowers manage to bloom in All-Japan Championship final without injured Ramu Tokashiki

The Eneos Sunflowers may have extended their All-Japan Championship title streak to eight straight, but that wasn’t the biggest news of the day.
What captured more attention was how they secured this latest Empress Cup while playing without star Ramu Tokashiki and a few other core players.
The team lost Tokashiki during the quarterfinals Wednesday, with the center/forward suffering an ACL tear an injury that may also have a major effect on the national team’s pursuit of gold at the Tokyo Olympics next summer.
The club, based in Kashiwa, Chiba Prefecture, was already without key members such as Saki Hayashi and Kadysha Juna Umezawa. Both are also national team members and missing due to injuries. ....

Japanese women's basketball team suffers blow to Tokyo 2020 medal hopes

Japan s women s basketball team has suffered a blow to their medal hopes for next year s Olympic Games in Tokyo after star player Ramu Tokashiki tore her anterior cruciate ligament (ACL).
The 29-year-old Tokashiki is now expected to miss out on Tokyo 2020 after suffering the injury during a match with domestic team Eneos Sunflowers. 
Her side had beaten Fujitsu Red Wave 78-59 in the quarter-finals of the All-Japan Championship at Yoyogi National Gymnasium.
Tokashiki has previously played for Seattle Storm in the Women s National Basketball Association in the United States and is a seven-time Women’s Japan Basketball League Most Valuable Player (MVP).  ....

Sunflowers come back to beat Antelopes in Empress Cup final

The Eneos Sunflowers overcame the loss of their star player Ramu Tokashiki to successfully extend their title streak to eight at the annual single-elimination All-Japan Championship with an 87-80 win over the Toyota Antelopes at Tokyo’s Yoyogi National Gymnasium No. 2 on Sunday.
It was the 25th Empress’ Cup that the Sunflowers hoisted, the most of all time. With eight straight titles, the Kashiwa, Chiba Prefecture-based club has also drawn even with Nichibo Hirano, whose record started in 1965, for the tournament’s longest championship streak.
It was an emotion victory for the Sunflowers, who competed without ace forward/center Tokashiki. The team announced on Saturday that the 29-year-old, considered a key part of Japan’s hopes of medaling at next year’s Tokyo Olympics, had torn her right ACL. ....
