Driven by Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) and Sen. Dan Sullivan’s (R-AK) undying effort to save their home state from a cruise-less summer and reverse its $3+ billion loss in tourism revenue, the pair convinced the U.S. Senate to pass the Alaska Tourism Restoration Act (ATRA). The bill provides a way for cruise ships to skirt the Canadian impediment and travel through Canadian waters en route to Alaska.  ....

Gov. Mike Dunleavy is trying to salvage Alaska’s fast-approaching summer tourism season through a Florida court.
The governor’s office announced April 20 that the Dunleavy administration would attempt to intervene in the State of Florida’s lawsuit against the Centers for Disease control to lift the federal agency’s Conditional Sailing Order that currently prohibits large cruise ships from sailing in domestic waters. ....

Alaska governor and legislature press for restart of big-cruise voyages amid dwindling hope for the 2021 tourist season

JUNEAU Gov. Mike Dunleavy and the Alaska Legislature are asking the federal government to waive a pair of COVID-related restrictions that will block large cruise ships from visiting the state this year.
Without prompt action, they said Friday, the state will suffer severe economic consequences.
“The simple fact is, this is a live or die moment for the economy of a huge portion of our state,” said Sen. Jesse Kiehl, D-Juneau.
The largest Alaska-bound cruise lines have already canceled their Alaska voyages through the start of July.
Ralph Samuels, an executive with Holland America Line and Princess Cruises and former state lawmaker, estimated that even if COVID-related restrictions were lifted today with a magic wand, “you’d probably be looking at the first of July” for the first large ship. ....
