BBMP previously classified thermocol as a type of plastic and discovered it lodged in the drain mesh throughout the city. The agency then established guidelines for thermocol usage and imposed a fine of Rs 100 for unlawfully discarding it. However, this enforcement effort proved inadequate as thermocol dumping has significantly obstructed drain systems.
According to another of its posts, the city’s observatory witnessed its wettest day of the year, recording 88.9 mm of rainfall by 8:30 am on Friday. “This amounts to 42.6% of the average September rainfall. Meanwhile, the HAL and KIAL observatories recorded 68.3 mm and 46.4 mm of rainfall, respectively.”
The BBMP will deploy different agencies to maintain the 573-kilometre-long stormwater drains (SWDs) or rajakaluves. Meant to stop flooding of low-lying areas, the project has been split into 30 packages, an indication that the MLAs had their way in ensuring direct supervision of the works.
