Afropop Worldwide | Wintering in East Africa

Wintering in East Africa
The winter months have brought music from far flung corners of the world that fire the imagination in unusual ways. In this column, I’ve reviewed four East Africa-related albums unlikely to appear on any pop charts at least not in this century. But each has a unique power to transport the listener away from this winter of contagion and cold.

New Music: Alice Cooper does Detroit proud on new album

There can be no mention of classic rock without including Alice Cooper.
Cooper’s influence on the hard rock/shock rock genre is legendary. Following his ’70s superstardom, subsequent decades saw the singer become as well-known for his golf game as his glam one.
But his Bob Ezrin-produced early albums such as Love It To the Death and Welcome to My Nightmare remain essential listening for emerging rockers. The artist has recognized this lately. His live show is dominated by early material.
Now he has reunited with Ezrin and a bunch of famed players from the heyday of the late-’60s and early-’70s Michigan scene for Detroit Stories. An homage to the place that first embraced the Alice Cooper band’s wild stage antics and high volume attack, the album follows the well-received Breadcrumbs EP which included covers of fellow scene stars such as Suzi Quatro and the MC5. ....

Somali group 4 Mars' music collected in Super Somali Sounds from the Gulf of Tadjoura

A new compilation of music by Somali group 4 Mars, called
Super Somali Sounds from the Gulf of Tadjoura, is being released on Ostinato’s
Djibouti Archives series, this February.
Featuring a 40-person ensemble of singers, dancers, musicians, actors, and percussionists, 4 Mars took its name from the founding date of The People’s Rally for Progress (4th March 1997).
The People’s Rally for Progress became Djibouti’s ruling political party since the country gained independence – uniting it with East Africa, particularly Somalia and Ethiopia.
The group served as The People’s Rally for Progress’ house band, with politicians using music as a way to unite, and create a sense of togetherness. ....
