Rafer Johnson honored by community

With a former principal of the junior high school named in his honor leading the way, the Kingsburg City Council adopted a resolution honoring him. Newly elected Mayor Laura North told several stories about Johnson, who some call “The World’s Greatest Athlete.”

With no members of the public present due to the pandemic, the council and city officials heard words of praise for Johnson from a State Senator.
Here is the text of the Resolution, without the Whereas:

On Dec. 2, 2020, one of Kingsburg‘s most distinguished hometown heroes, Rafer Lewis Johnson, passed away at 86. He was a 1960 Olympic gold medalist in the Decathlon, after getting silver in 1956 and a gold in a 1955 Pan American games. Remembering a fraternity brother who broke through color barrier

Having turned 81 in September during the lethal COVID-19 pandemic, and facing the challenges of aging and losing loved ones more frequently, I’m reluctant to glance at the “In Memoriam” lists from University City High School, Washington University and its law school, and from my beloved college fraternity, Pi Lambda Phi, where I made lifelong friends.
In recent days my fraternity, which flourished at Washington U. from 1921-1971, suffered the loss of Brother Rafer Lewis Johnson, who broke the color-line at UCLA by becoming the first African American to join a social fraternity in the university’s history. For Pi Lam nationally Johnson’s membership in our Upsilon Chapter was a great source of pride. While our Missouri Pi Chapter at Washington U. was mostly Jewish, when Pi Lam was founded in 1895 at Yale University it became the first non-sectarian college fraternity in the United States. ....

Former Athlete Rafer Johnson, Country Musician Charley Pride, both 86

Black America lost two of its iconic figures this month.
Both born in 1934, Rafer Lewis Johnson died of a stroke on December 2 in Los Angeles and Charley Frank Pride was a COVID-19 victim who succumbed on December 12 in Dallas, Texas.
Both men were athletes, Johnson an Olympic decathlete, and Pride was once a pitcher in the Negro Leagues.
Born in Texas, Johnson moved with his family to the San Joaquin Valley town of Kingsburg and became a high school sports phenomenon while picking cotton with his father and siblings.
Johnson was a silver medalist in the 1956 Olympics in Melbourne, Australia, and a gold medalist in Rome in 1960, the same year Wilma Rudolph, Muhammed Ali, and Oscar Roberson competed. ....
