(smith) those suffering from moral injury may have symptoms similar to post-traumatic stress, such as depression and suicidal thoughts. they may self-medicate with drugs and alcohol. however, the root causes are different. ptsd is fear-based, while moral injury stems from feelings of guilt and shame. a lot of them will say things like, god will never forgive me for this. um, you know, i don t know how i actually could do that. i can t live with myself. i m trying to forget. i drink every day so i can forget. live, from the cbs bay area studios, this is kpix5 news. a bart officer killed in the line of duty last year. tonight, his family is suing bart. good evening, i m allen martin. ken bastida has the night off. i m elizabeth cook. juliette goodrich says this is the first of its kind lawsuit against bart because it involves the first bart officer killed in the line of duty. reporter: that s right. the family s attorneys filed the lawsuit in court. it is a typical legal document. but in an unusual move, the officer s wife also wrote bart a personal letter. she says her husband told her years ago what to do if anything like this ever happened to him. kelly smith was an officer at bart for almost 20 years when her husband detective tommy smith was killed in the line of duty. shot by partner officer michael maize when the two were doing a probation search at a dublin apartment. if you are lucky to find the love of your life, hold onto it. reporter: we interviewed kelly t
