Beth Din of Arabia: Jews in Gulf countries announce first communal organizations

The Jewish communities in six Persian Gulf countries announced on Monday the establishment of the region’s first communal organization, complete with a rabbi and Jewish court, the Beth Din of Arabia.
The Association of Gulf Jewish Communities (AGJC), which brings together Jews in  Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, will be headed by Rabbi Dr. Elie Abadie and president Ebrahim Dawood Nonoo.
The AGJC is creating a Jewish court, called the Beth Din of Arabia, to preside over issues of civil disputes, personal status, inheritance, and Jewish ritual. It will also run the Arabian Kosher Certification Agency throughout the six Gulf countries. ....

The Talmud (
Megillah 7b) cites Rava’s opinion that one must become drunk on Purim to the point that one is unable to tell the difference between “cursed be Haman” and “blessed be Mordecai.”
But the same passage goes on to report that Rabba and Rav Zeira became so drunk on Purim that Rabba slaughtered Rav Zeira with a knife. The latter was revived only by a miracle. When Rabba invited Rav Zeira to a Purim celebration the following year, Rav Zeira wisely declined.
Some people read this passage but stop right after Rava’s opinion. Others correctly read the entire passage and recognize that the anecdote is a blatant refutation of this position. The Talmud’s lesson is: Don’t get drunk. Terrible things can happen if you do. ....

(December 20, 2020, MANAMA, Bahrain, JNS Wire) The Foundation for Ethnic Understanding (FFEU) launched the first North American-Jewish tourism initiative to Bahrain in partnership with Best of Bahrain and Da’at Travel, who will facilitate the itineraries for large groups and individual travelers.
The new initiative is spearheaded by FFEU President Rabbi Marc Schneier following an invitation from King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa of Bahrain to bring more Jewish tourists to the Kingdom. Following the Abraham Accords, the Kingdom has been on a trajectory of rapid growth in attracting Jewish tourism, especially after one of its top hotels – the Ritz Carlton – announced it will be offering kosher food.
