it is september 14th. this is your a.m. wake-up call. i m carol costello joining you live this morning from new york. thanks for waking up with us. nearly one in six americans are now living in poverty. that s according to a new report from the census bureau. it s a gut check on where we stand in the wake of the recession. here are the raw numbers from the government. 46.2 million lived in poverty in 2010. that s over 15% of the population, the highest level since 1993. for a family of four, the poverty line is just over $22,000 a year. some advocates for the poor say that bar is way too low, but the conservative heritage foundation is pushing back again. if you qualify as being in poverty today, then you re really in deep poverty because that number is so low. that s based on an outdated formula from the 60s. i think that these numbers are designed to exaggerate the extent of poverty in the united states in order to build a larger welfare state, and it does make ....

Shellfish, may have heart problems, women who are pregnant. it doesn t make sense because it s not like the chicken soup remedy to protect yourself from what s happening in japan. kelly, it seems like the job right now for emergency management folks is as much to calm fears as to inform them about the real risks here. so good luck with that job. thank you. you know, i m always amazed that folks will rush out and say buy iodine pills to protect against radiation poisoning, but most folks don t even take the basic precautions to prepare for an emergency, a go bag, copies of important documents, a communications plan to reconnect with the family. so my big question today, why don t we, as individuals, take emergency preparedness more seriously? tell me why you think that is. you can let me know onç twitte on facebook. my e-mail is @contessa@msnbc. liberation square was the ....
Proliferation of guns in the hands of the wrong people is something that needs attention. and you get the attention by giving ourselves a chance to examine the person s record. right now records have to be destroyed. and 24 hours if a transaction goes through. so, we re too lenient with availability of guns and if a person wants to buy a gun, there isn t any earthly reason why we can t take a few days to thoroughly examine the record and then just maybe we d be fortunate enough to apprehend these people or block a sale, if they re on a massacre. i know the discussion is not only taking place in the halls of congress but dinner tables as the nation reexamines its support for gun rights and whether more gun control is the answer. senator lautenberg, thank you so much for your time today, sir. thank you. a lot of scrutiny, of course, for arizona s and america s gun culture. so my big question today, ....
This means in the scope of drug trafficking in the area. let s hear what he had to say. now, without question today s arrests will disrupt drug trafficking operations in puerto rico and help to strengthen law enforcement operations across and beyond the island. to the people of puerto rico, let me say this. as you continue your fight against drug trafficking, violent crime and corruption, we will continue to stand with you. this is very important, tony, because when we talk about disrupting the drug trafficking operations not only in puerto rico but in the region right. puerto rico has long been a transit point for drugs from south america and as the war on drugs in mexico gets tougher, puerto rico has become the chosen point of the destination for drug cartels to send their drugs into the united states so this is very significant and just think about it. 133 people being arrested today and this is still ongoing. ....
