Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir policeâs decision to pursue legal action against scribes and photographers who come close to gunbattle sites or near scenes of clashes between forces and protesters has created a flutter in the press fraternity in Kashmir, with media bodies terming the latest decree as a âtactic to coerce journalists into not reporting facts on the groundâ.

New Delhi: The Delhi Union of Journalists (DUJ) condemned the “repeated attacks on journalists” in various states across the country, and drew attention to the recent attack against Kashmiri photojournalist Qisar Mir by security forces.
In a statement issued on Monday, April 5, it said: “We deeply regret the growing antagonism towards media persons who are simply doing their job.”
Referring to the assault on Mir, it said he was merely covering a gunfight, along with other journalists, near Pulwama on April 2, 2021 when he was kicked from behind by a police constable. Kashmiri journalists covering clashes near a gunfight site in Pulwama on Friday were assaulted by the security forces. In a video being shared on Twitter, a police constable is seen kicking local photojournalist Qisar Mir.
Syed Shahriyar, another photojournalist who was on the scene, and made the video, told
Newslaundry they had gone to cover the gunfight like they usually do, only to be assaulted by the security forces when they started recording their clashes with local residents.
