先来说说宋朝的皇宫是不是比较小。北宋开封的宫城范围为东西宽1050米，南北长1090米（不包括延福宫），面积为1144500平方米，大约是故宫的1.5倍。由此得出一个结论：宋朝皇宫并不比清明皇宫小。可惜这个答案是错误的。
可能不知道，北宋开封城只有三重，即外城、内城、宫城（皇城），而清代的北京城是四重的，即外城、内城、皇城、宫城，故宫只是宫城的范围罢了。整个皇城的范围要比宫城大得多，东西长约2500米，南北约2790米，面积约6.9平方公里。是北宋皇城的好几倍。
因此，相对于汉唐明清，宋代皇城的格局确实是比较小的。
再来说说北宋皇城为什么会比较小。主要的原因是，汴梁城是从唐代的州城发展起来的，宫城的前身只是节度使的治所，自然不可跟长安、洛阳这样的故都相比。
