The number of custodial deaths has been increasing in the country for many years now. Social media plays an important role in highlighting such deaths, leading to much-needed public outrage and the subsequent outcry for police reforms. However, despite all hue and cry and all pledges of reforms, the number of deaths in custody continues to rise. This is because the higher authorities seem oblivious to the root cause of the problem. Police torture is a direct result of the pressure that policemen have to deal with to recover stolen goods. An investigation officer has to bear grave consequences in case he fails to trace stolen items. As a result, he usually resorts to torturing a detainee. In many cases, this torture leads to the death of a detainee. This problem cannot be resolved unless the police authorities do away with this outdated system of recovery.
