Virtual events create busy Hermitage Greenfield Prize weekend

During three days of activities, CEO and Artistic Director Andy Sandberg said arts lovers also will get sneak peeks at two of the works being created by past Hermitage Greenfield Prize commissions. The premieres of those works were delayed because of the pandemic.
Helga Davis, a composer, vocalist and performance artist and winner of the 2019 prize, had intended to present the premiere of “Ocean Body/Ocean Vessel” with ensembleNEWSRQ and the Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe on Monday. But Sandberg said the debut will wait until sometime during next season.
Instead, Davis will offer excerpts of her piece, described as exploring a friendship through music, sculpture and Manasota Key, during a virtual program at 7 p.m. Thursday. ....

Playwright David Auburn enjoys collaboration in creating theater

That collaborative work also attracts him to direct. “When I don’t have one of my own plays, it gives me a chance to flex my muscles and work with other people,” he said.
Auburn won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and Tony Award in 2001 for his Broadway hit “Proof.” He later wrote the screenplay for the 2005 film with Gwyneth Paltrow, Jake Gyllenhaal and Anthony Hopkins.
At the Hermitage, Auburn said he will be tinkering with or rewriting parts of a play called “Summer, 1976,” which is due to have its premiere in the coming theater season, and he hopes to start turning attention to “a bunch of other pieces, fragments of things that I have acquired over the course of quarantine. I don’t know yet if they amount to anything.” ....
