Smuggling ops smoked out by marine police

PONTIAN: A foreign cargo ship travelling frequently between Perak and Batam, Indonesia, in the last one month raised the suspicion of marine police, leading to the seizure of illicit cigarettes worth RM52mil.
Bukit Aman Internal Security and Public Order Department director Comm Datuk Seri Abd Rahim Jaafar said that the Mongolian-registered vessel was coming from Myanmar and heading towards Batam.
He added that marine police stopped the vessel at 2.9 nautical miles south-west of Pulau Kukup at about 8.15pm on Monday night after noticing it travelling back and forth very frequently in the last 30 days.
He said marine police had been monitoring the vessel following information that an illicit cigarette smuggling syndicate has been receiving the contraband items within Johor’s west coast area. ....

Island park a natural habitat for mangrove trees and migratory birds

THE Pulau Kukup National Park in Pontian has been seeing a steady increase in visitors.
In 2015, it received 25,586 local and foreign visitors. The figure rose to 38,779 in 2019.
“The number of visitors dropped significantly last year, to only 14,630, due to the Covid-19 pandemic and movement control order, ” said Johor National Parks Corporation director Hanis Musalman Salehan.
The national park has been temporarily closed to visitors since the start of the second movement control order on Jan 13.
The StarMetro team was given the privilege to visit the 647ha island and its 800ha mudflats.
Pulau Kukup National Park was gazetted on March 27,1997 and declared a Ramsar site on Jan 31,2001. ....

PONTIAN: A couple of graphic designers are using their handmade crafts, made with natural mangrove dye, to shed light on the beauty of the coastal trees.
Jo Wong Seok Wei, 47, and her husband Lim Beng Chee, 53, started exploring the use of natural dye from mangrove barks about two years ago and have since produced their own line of natural fashion and lifestyle products.
Beng Chee recalled that about two years ago, they attended many workshops in Kuala Lumpur, Perak and even went to Thailand to learn about natural dyeing techniques. ....
