There are six spot-breasted thrushes that summer in the United States. The Hermit Thrush is the only one that also winters here. It can be found throughout the year in Washington’s mountains: the Olympics, the Cascades, the Selkirks in the northeast, and the Blues in the southeast. Some birds migrate in late fall to the Puget Lowlands and coastal Washington. This species leaves in spring for its breeding grounds about the time the Swainson’s Thrush arrives.
Insects and berries make up most of the Hermit Thrush’s diet. Insects include ants, beetles, caterpillars, grasshoppers, true bugs, earthworms, spiders, and occasionally small salamanders. It forages on the ground for insects, plucking them from leaf litter and soil. It will also forage by a technique called foot quivering. It shakes bits of grass with its feet to get at insects. In the months leading up to the first COVID-19 vaccine shipments, Washington state health officials agonized over which residents should be vaccinated before others. They surveyed 18,000 people and convened focus groups, debating race, age and essential occupations.
But unlike some other states, the state Department of Health (DOH) neglected to plan for basic logistics that would have allowed for quick vaccination of those most vulnerable to the disease.
They didn’t enlist the National Guard. They didn’t centralize vaccine appointments. Key scheduling and reporting software arrived late. Providers were given vials but no strategy to process patients. ....

SEATTLE The first real snowfall of the season was moving through a swath of Western Washington Thursday, the first of at least a pair of winter storms forecast to move through the region through the weekend.

SEATTLE Local governments around Western Washington on Wednesday began making plans for the risk of frozen precipitation, which is likely to occur in waves over the next three days.
KOMO News meteorologist Shannon O Donnell said a few flakes could fall Thursday but most of that snow will be limited to areas in the South Sound. She said the chance for greater totals from 6 to 12 inches could occur Friday night into Saturday in parts of King County.
The models are really going for it so I would prepare for that, O Donnell said. ....
