Divestment Activists Allege Harvard's Fossil Fuel Investments Violate State Law in Complaint to State AG | News

Activists with Fossil Fuel Divest Harvard — a student group calling for the University to divest from fossil fuels — filed a complaint with Massachusetts Attorney General Maura T. Healey ’92 on Monday, alleging that Harvard’s highest governing board is violating state law through its continued investments in the fossil fuel industry.
The complaint claims the University’s fossil fuel holdings, valuated at less than two percent of the total endowment, represent the Harvard Corporation’s “failure” to comply with a provision of the 2009 Uniform Prudent Management of Institutional Funds Act provision that stipulates that not-for-profit entities have a duty to invest with their charitable purposes in mind. ....

The Harvard Graduate Council heard updates on recent activism work, reviewed petitions, mulled graduate student IT policies, and passed constitutional amendments Monday evening during its first public meeting of the month.

UC Endorses Petitions in Support of Cornel West and Against Statements by J. Mark Ramseyer | News

The Undergraduate Council voted to endorse a pair of statements during its Sunday night meeting — one supporting a petition to grant tenure to Professor of the Practice of Public Philosophy Cornel R. West ’74, and another to condemn statements made by Harvard Law professor J. Mark Ramseyer.
The first piece of legislation demands the University “reopen pathways for Professor West’s tenure and further commit to advancing racial justice in substantive ways.”
West recently threatened to leave Harvard for the second time after he said the University dismissed his request to be considered for tenure. He held Harvard’s highest faculty rank, University Professor, before leaving Harvard in 2002 following a high-profile spat with then-University president Lawrence H. “Larry” Summers. West returned as a Professor of the Practice in 2017, a position that lacks tenure. ....

Doctoral students from across Harvard’s graduate and professional schools penned a letter in support of Practice of Public Philosophy Cornel R. West ’74, who recently threatened a second departure from the University after he said the administration dismissed his request to be considered for tenure.
Published on Monday, the letter amassed over 150 signatures from doctoral students at the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, the Graduate School of Education, Harvard Medical School, the Graduate School of Design, and the School of Public Health as of Wednesday night.
