MPs Continue To Press Ministers Over Public Notices
MPs have continued to press Ministers over the issue of public notices in local newspapers, raising concerns that removing them from printed local newspapers will leave elderly and vulnerable groups cut out of the democratic process.
Stella Creasy, Labour MP for Walthamstow, tabled a question this week asking the Culture Secretary “what discussions he has had with the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government on the importance of advertising planning notices in local newspapers to (a) the elderly and vulnerable, (b) other local residents and (b) local media organisations.” ....

NMA: Local Media Leading The Way In Improving Engagement With Public Notices
The local news media sector is leading the way in boosting engagement with public notices with innovations such as the public notices portal and the new public notices publishing guidelines, the News Media Association has said.
In a response to the Future of Transport: rural strategy consultation, the NMA highlighted the new initiatives which are part of the industry’s drive to improve public engagement with public notices.
“The NMA and our members share the Government’s desire to see greater levels of innovation when it comes to the future of transport, and news publishers are leading the way in this regard,” the NMA said. ....

Opposition to plans to pull traffic notices from local newspapers

Leading publishers of regional news have have written to the Transport Secretary after a new threat to public notices emerged in the form of a Government-commissioned report recommending the abolition of the requirement for transport notices to be advertised in local newspapers.
The News Media Association (NMA), which represents the industry, has written to Transport Secretary Grant Shapps.
The new threat to public notices comes after Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden said Government understood the role public notices play in local newspapers and was “working closely to ensure that we protect that.”
The local media sector and scores of MPs have expressed grave concerns over proposals to remove planning notices from local papers, which would leave millions of people disenfranchised, undermining local democracy. ....
