The grant of almost $12,000 will support a community reading program that every year centers around a particular book. This year the book is "An American Sunrise" by Joy Harjo, who is the current United States Poet Laureate. The Big Read is an initiative of the NEA in partnership with Arts Midwest that aims to "broaden our understanding of our world, our communities, and ourselves through the joy of sharing a good book." This is year number 14 for the Big Read in Galesburg. Galesburg Public Library Director Noelle Thompson says they, "look forward to bringing the community together to soak up Joy Harjo's illuminating poetry."
