Following the shock announcement of the closure of the National Cancer Research Institute (NCRI) last month, reeling researchers are already trying to find ways to continue its “critical” work, writes Eva Amsen
The National Cancer Research Institute (NCRI) announced its closure at the end of June 2023, ending over two decades of work that united the UK’s cancer research community. In the wake of that surprise announcement, blindsided researchers are working out how to continue the work the institute did connecting people across the community and beyond.
When the NCRI was set up in 2001, the initial goal was to identify the areas of cancer research that needed more attention. This led to the creation of the Cancer Research Database, which collects data on cancer research funding in the UK. The institute also actively tackled some of the research gaps it identified through NCRI groups (https://www.ncri.org.uk/groups/).
