Riverside County District Attorney challenges Newsom's moratorium on executions


After Gov. Gavin Newsom s 2019 moratorium on California executions, a group of condemned inmates agreed to halt their civil rights lawsuit questioning the constitutionality of the state s execution practices. 
 But, some county prosecutors, including Riverside County District Attorney Mike Hestrin, were incensed by the governor s decision and have turned to the courts in an effort to get Newsom s moratorium overruled and capital punishment reinstated in California. 
On March 5, in the latest salvo in this case, four community organizations and an American Civil Liberties Union affiliate asked a California appeals court to reign in Hestrin and the district attorneys of San Bernardino and San Mateo counties who are seeking to overturn the condemned inmates agreement. ....

Kaiser Permanente Commits $1 Million to Promote Racial Equity in Southern California

Kaiser Permanente, the nation’s largest integrated, nonprofit health system, today announced it has awarded $8.15 million to support 40 nonprofit and community-based organizations across the nation, whose programs address systemic racism and its accompanying trauma on individuals and communities of color.
This includes $1 million for 10 organizations in Southern California, and is part of a $25 million commitment Kaiser Permanente announced in June to promote health equity and break the cycle of racism-driven stresses that lead to poor health outcomes for its communities. Kaiser Permanente serves 4.7 million members in Southern California. ....
