The president wants credit for the vaccine | Sheneman

The president wants credit for the vaccine | Sheneman

Vaccines are a miracle of science responsible for saving hundreds of millions of lives over the centuries since their inception. The development of a coronavirus vaccine, or more accurately, multiple vaccines with efficacy in excess of 90% in less than a year is a triumph for the dedicated doctors and scientists who labored over them. With more than 305,000 Americans dead from COVID-19, a vaccine is an incredibly hopeful development, but never forget, it didn’t have to be this bad.
If the president had taken decisive action earlier, tens of thousands of Americans who died would still be here to enjoy the holidays with their families. If he had mandated masks, encouraged social distancing and modeled that same behavior while waiting for a vaccine it would have saved lives. One ounce of empathy could have changed the grim arithmetic of 5% of the global population having 20% ....

Writer: Without Resources, COVID-19 Vaccine Rollout Could Fall At 'Last Hurdle' : Shots

This is FRESH AIR. I m Terry Gross.
It s astonishing that scientists were able to develop vaccines for a virus that wasn t even identified a year ago. This week, American health care workers started getting the first COVID vaccine to be approved in the U.S. Also this week, the FDA approved a new rapid test that you can take at home and get results in about 20 minutes.
My guest, Ed Yong, has a new article in The Atlantic about the science that led to developing COVID vaccines in record time, the flawed science that helped lead to misguided policies and the lessons that can be applied to future pandemics. He s been covering this pandemic since it began, writing about nearly every aspect, including how the virus is spread, what the government got wrong, the long-haulers who have symptoms lasting for months and the mental health of the doctors and nurses caring for patients. Yong is a staff writer at The Atlantic, where he covers science. His new article is titled How Scienc ....

Hope For Brighter Days Ahead
Wednesday, December 16, 2020
Sunrise from Elder Mountain
Thanks to all those involved with Project Warp Speed who are making possible the development and distribution of COVID-19 vaccines, as well as the frontline care providers who battle the pandemic every day.

Along with our thanks come expressions of hope for brighter days ahead.  Hope for an end to the pandemic, hope and comfort for the families who mourn the loss of loved ones, hope for a recovering economy, and much more.
With this week’s first inoculations of the vaccine in the U.S., this sunrise photo I captured from my home takes on new meaning as an expression of hope for those brighter days ahead. ....

Edward B. Harmon: Biden needs courage to appeal to Trump voters

Despite hundreds of affidavits claiming voter fraud in the 2020 election, Joe Biden will be our next president. The nation has never been so divided. Biden ran on a campaign pledging to be president “for all Americans” through his alleged decency and ability to work with his opponents.
Biden will be 78 when inaugurated, likely a one-term president, and has a brief time in which to work to lower the level of political animus and move the nation forward. As a proud Republican who has, with no regrets, voted for President Donald Trump twice I would like to suggest how Biden can do that. ....
