Five Black businesses making a difference in their communities and thriving despite COVID-19 By April Siese February 24, 2021 / 6:02 AM / CBS News When Jailaih Gowdy celebrated her birthday last year on June 2 – Blackout Tuesday – she wished for a business: A market with nutrition and education in mind, meant to serve the New Orleans community via a network of Black business owners. Less than a year later, that dream was not only realized, but has grown into something even bigger. For Us, By Us Market in New Orleans, Louisiana, is somewhat akin to a farmers market. Operating on the last Saturday of each month, vendors include Black farmers and Black-owned businesses. Speakers such as local political candidates come to make their case. Family activities abound, including a mobile petting zoo. The market offers robust brunch options featuring vegan items sure to delight even the most persnickety carnivore. Democratic Ulster County Executive Pat Ryan unveiled a few initiatives during his pre-recorded Facebook address. “In 2021, Ulster County will become one of the first in the country to undertake a large-scale universal basic income pilot program,” says Ryan. Through a partnership between Project Resilience, the University of Pennsylvania’s Center for Guaranteed Income, Community Foundations of the Hudson Valley and Ulster Savings Bank, Ulster County will be providing 100 qualifying households with direct relief payments of $500 a month for a year, funded through community donations. Today we’ll feature a special program about how seniors and people with disabilities are using technology during the pandemic. From getting hooked up to the internet for the first time, to building community virtually to the hurdles and expanded opportunities of remote work. We’ll also talk to the special’s host and reporter Shoshannah Buxbaum. Later in the program we’ll hear from Sachin Pavithran. He recently started a new position as the executive director of the U.S. Access Board. He’s been working in the field of accessibility for people with disabilities for the past two decades. ....
Ellenville Students K-6 Get Help from Project Resilience This past year has been tough on everyone. COVID-19 has had us all doing things we never thought we would do. I can imagine being a parent over the last 12 months trying to figure out how to balance working a job and virtual learning. I feel fortunate that I am not of the age to have children trying to go to school at the kitchen table. A lot of programs have been developed to help people who are in need of help one of which is Project Resilience in Ulster County. This program was developed by Ulster County Executive Pat Ryan in partnership with the Community Foundation and the United Ways. The program is designed to help people who are impacted by the pandemic. They work with local food banks on the increasing amount of food insecurity and they also help Ulster families with other types of support during this difficult time. ....
