(TNS) Language barriers often hinder Asian Americans access to lifesaving coronavirus vaccines, says a coalition led by a Bay Area health center.
To measure and highlight the problem, Asian Health Services in Oakland unveiled a new website Monday to collect and publish such stories from around the country.

With the intense increase in anti-Asian hate this year, we understand the necessity of documenting and raising the visibility of these experiences, said Thu Quach, Asian Health Services chief deputy of administration. ....

AAPI Organizers Turn Out the Vote in Georgia

AAPI Organizers Turn Out the Vote in Georgia
Between November 7, 2020 and January 5, 2021, women of color and Asian American and Pacific Islander organizers helped Democrats Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock flip the Senate by winning both runoff elections in Georgia. This rare opportunity to unseat both incumbents has national implications because it gives a chance to enact the policies of the new Biden administration.
This is no easy feat, because the special runoff election, which was triggered when no candidate gained above 50% of votes in the November general election, was designed to prevent candidates backed by Black and minority voters from winning. Historically, it has worked as intended by placing hurdles for voters, oftentimes minority and low-income individuals who have limited capacity to reach polls in the first place, requiring them to show up to the polls once again for an election they had already voted in. This is in addition to voter suppression through pol ....

Thao & the Get Down Stay Down plays the 2018 Noise Pop Music and Arts Festival at the Fox Theater in Oakland.
 (Estefany Gonzalez)
Looking back at the early days of her career, Thao Nguyen remembers times she didn’t feel whole. Navigating a mostly white indie rock scene since the late 2000s caused her to downplay aspects of her Vietnamese-ness in the face of covert and overt racism. And she wasn’t out as queer to everyone in her life, which made it impossible to share her full self with some of the people close to her.
After years of searching and processing, she’s arrived in a secure place where she lives proudly in her truth. ....

Donald Trump, whose presidency officially came to a close last month, deepened divisions across communities with high foreign-born populations by perpetuating a narrative of good and bad immigrants, critics say.
Now, immigration advocates say President Joe Biden will have to act to implement policies to undo that rift.
“I implore the Biden administration to live up to its call for unity by precisely not using this trick of dividing us into accepting seats at the table for some and scraps for others,” Thi Bui, a Vietnamese American author and activist told NBC Asian America. ....

Vietnamese community reacts after South Vietnam flag flies at violent Capitol riot

Vietnamese community reacts after South Vietnam flag flies at violent Capitol riot
Isabelle Taft, The Sun Herald
Jan. 15 Growing up in Biloxi, Sean Nguyen learned that the yellow- and red-striped flag of South Vietnam represented much more than the country his family had left.
What I was taught is, that flag represents everything that we fought for, he said. And kind of coming to America to live in a democracy, in a way.
Last week, Nguyen saw the flag among the Trump banners, Gadsden flags, stars and stripes and Confederate battle flags in the crowd at the U.S. Capitol. (There were also several other national flags, including for Israel, Cuba, South Korea and Canada.) It wasn t really a surprise, he said: many Vietnamese Americans, especially older people, strongly support the president. ....
