The president basically said to us without saying to us, this ain t going no further. you can march and protest and rally i don t think he said that. i didn t say he said it. let me say this. the mistake that people make is to prejudge an investigation before it takes place. well, the attorney general will decide. but the president we talk about legislation. i understand about the stand your ground laws. but there are some things we can do. we as a congressional black caucus have put in place, at least drafted over the last couple weeks racial profiling. that s what this was. i don t care what they say it was. that is what it was. if we start to do things from the congressional level, maybe that can help. let me just say this. i don t care how many laws you put in place. you cannot legislate against prejudice or bias or racism. you cannot do it. and so all we can do is the best we can. but that goes toward the morality of the question. can i put something else on the ....

Legislation that disproportionately affects black and brown people like zero tolerance policies and racial profiling within law enforcement are also a part of what allowed george zimmerman to walk free. because we talk about it as the criminalization of our youth. and we feel as though that s what killed trayvon martin. now, florida state senator chris smith appeared on msnbc this morning. let me play you what he said. if the legislature comes back and we don t even discuss it again, if we just put our heads in the sand and pretend everything is fine, you will see voices growing. and i wouldn t be surprised if it gains more momentum if we don t at least discuss it. and that s why we ve been pressing the legislature to at least hear the bills. at least let s start the discussion, let s do what the president has said, let s do what senator mccain has said, let s at least have that discussion in the legislature. last year they avoided it. this year is the time to at least act and disc ....

I m wondering if you think there s more that can be done at a federal level, or are we talking about the kinds of programs you re talking about, just block by block, city by city? first, let s agree on something. this is bigger than one man. no one man, including the man in the white house, including a black man in the white house, can solve this by himself or herself. the president said something very important. we have a history on these issues. i think the more important thing that he said and i loved his speech was our children know how to deal with this better than we do, and that s the hopeful part of this. every generation, we do it better. as you said, it s not going to be sxwruft a matter of institutions a particular problem, it s about doing this as a collective, as a people, we re going to move together and heal and move forward together. there was also discussion by the president about profiling and looking at state laws and various things. it always occurs to me wh ....

Lot of that yesterday, as only a president of the united states can. trayvon martin will be with us in eternity. that s what he s done. the president has moved trayvon martin up to be a symbol of racial profiling in america. he did not walk to the podium for an impromptu address to the nation. he was pushed to that podium. a week of protests outside the white house, pressure building on him inside the white house pushed him to that podium, so i m glad he finally arrived. but when he left the podium, he still had not answered the most important question, where do we go from here. l.z., did the president wait too long to speak out and did he walk out or was he pushed? you know, i think there s a combination of all three. i think if your livelihood is based upon communicating, dealing with, intimately involved with the african-american community, then it looks as if the president took too long to address this. ....

After trayvon martin was killed but before george zimmerman was charged in his death. racial profiling has to stop, mr. speaker. just because someone wears a hoodie does not make them a hoodlum. joining me from chicago is illinois congressman bobby rush, who was there on the house floor, as you just saw. congressman, i heard a couple of things here. i know that you are having an urban violence seminar, meeting coming up. you represent one of the most certainly violent districts in illinois. you ve had a the lot of problems with poverty, et cetera. when you look at, not the trial itself, but the aftermath, as newt gingrich was talking about, where do you see the base of this problem? well, it certainly lies in ....
