Themselves. young girls were trapped in a house ten years. nobody, nobody found them. they just walked down the street. the bus is no different. we have to move on, but this is important. this is a federal judge ruling in new york city monday that the stop and risk tactics of the nypd violated constitutional rights of minorities in the city. this judge called it indirect racial profiling. why should everybody out there care? because eric, this is coming to cities, to everybody at home, this is something that department of justice is pushing. they re pushing to get these advisory boards to monitor the cops. can you imagine if cops can t stop and frisk suspects? i was wrestling with this all day yesterday, trying to figure out, i am very much in favor of fourth amendment, probable cause, greg s head is going to explode if i say it one more time. trying to apply this. ....

Use racial profiling as a measure of law. you ve got to have a reasonable doubt about that person s innocence to approach them and then finally, it means we can go down the street and breathe more freely because our rights are not being presumed to be taken from us before they even granted. steve, you re a knowledgeable guy. let s go over a few statistics about the u.s. criminal justice system. 2 million people, that s how many americans are lock add up right now. the u.s. accounts for 25% of the world s prison population even though it has just 5% of the world s population. the number of nations around the worrelled that locks up more people than the united states is zero. why has it taken so long for politicians to get hold of this issue? i think there s two reasons. one is that the crime rate. the guy sitting next to you has been writing and critiquing this problem for decades. think of the context though a couple of decades ago. the early 1990s when the crime rate was soari ....

Juncture? we have made such significant gains in this country. but clearly what we have seen over the past few years with regard to voting in particular shows us that we can t be complacent and that there are those who don t want everyone to participate in our democracy. so we have a long way to go. we know after the zimmerman acquittal that we have a a lot of work to do with regard to racial profiling and really in having a discussion on race in this country. so, i mean, i m always hopeful but i do think that this signals that we are not quite there yet. we are not at the dream that martin luther king jr. talked about in august of 1963. almost 50 years ago exactly. thank you for being on the program. new york city s mayor michael bloomberg was pretty defiant yesterday and said he is appealing the decision on the ....

People produced a weapon. therefore, on the police department s own standard, the most suspicious group, the most fertile group for weapons, is white people. that s exactly right. and that s why the nypd statistics were so hurtful to them in this case, and it s why they lost on two grounds on 14th amendment equal protection grounds, which have to do with disparate treatment by race. and on the broad fourth amendment on reasonable search grounds. and lawrence, to your point, what does it teach us? number one, it teaches us that this program is very bad at finding weapons. let s recall that the judicial standard that s mandated under the law, even under this lower rule, which is stop and frisk as compared to a traditional search, is still that you have some real cognizable suspicion there s a weapon there. that suspicion shouldn t lead to you 1 out of 100. and secondly, that teaches you that what was actually going on was a type of racial profiling. and that s where this fight s ....
