Barack obama was a candidate in 2007. he gave a bold proposal for criminal justice reform at a speech at howard university. this is what the president proposed. he proposed a federal level racial profiling act. he promised if he would become president, loan forgiveness to law students who would become public defenders as a means to level the playing field for poor latinos and quite frankly, poor whites, who couldn t afford a defense in the criminal justice accept. he said he would do away with the death penalty. and limit the sentencing dispairti dispairties. so that is the promissory note that candidate obama in my view has not come through with. and so i was expecting more policy responses in this day where as the delegate, the d.c. ....

And others and say, we re just humbled to be here. the civil rights movement is our compass, it s our blueprint. it s the reason for being, it s the reason we re here. we re blessed to having that as a compass, due north for us. it s humbling to be here, it s humbling they speak so highly of us, and really the work that we have to do is sadly reminiscent of the work that was spoken about in the i have a dream speech. one of the things that i think is interesting. you did this occupation for a special session, and then a law named after trayvon martin, and racial profiling, and the school, the prison pipeline. are you reinventing direct action, or are you going back and reading the manuals? are you learning the the way we look at it is, we have a car. and that car was built very well, but we have the benefit of some gps now. ....

We ve talked about stop and frisk, stand your ground, and about the war on drugs and how it is constantly criminalizing nonviolent marijuana users who are making a public health choice. what do we need to do to move forward do we need to do to mo forward there? we see the attorney general trying to make changes but he can t do it alone. number one, get racial profiling out of policing. that is our biggest problem. people are arrested for minor offenses. we ve got to stop and decriminalize, you know, all of these minor offenses. it s wronging that 52% of everyone sitting in a jail isitying there because of a simple minor offense. that s not that they were engaging in nel hard crime. they were just either possessing a joint, you know, something like wiig arrest 900,000 people a year for simple marijuana possession? i mean this is just wrong. and we are spending $33,000 per head for everyone in jail. less than 10,000, a little bit ....

Yet when the president comes forward with economic proposals that might account for this gap and do something about it he s called a socialist. why is there a discrepancy in understanding the black situation in america? well i think it is because we haven t confronted how widespread the negative perceptions of people of color are in this country. i mean one of the great legacies of segregation and apartheid and racism and the history of racial injustice it wasn t just that people of color were victimized. lots of people were actually taught that they are better than other people because of their skin color and it s an abusive and corruptive thing to hear and learn and internalize that if you re not pro active in addressing that it will manifest itself in a lot of ways. that s why we have racial profiling. that s why we re insensitive dealing with huge disparities in black unemployment, disparities in health, disparities in all ....

Policies to uplift all americans but particularly black americans who gave him over 90% of the vote each time and he has abandoned agenda for him. i agree with jesse jackson for the first time if you can believe that in that martin luther king would be horrified not only at the lack of focus on opportunity policies which king was all about but also the politics of low expectation and victimization that this president continues to tell black americans, you are not good enough. you can t get a voter i.d. it is because of racial profiling. one final thing, it is because of, you know, you are just a victim. you are having 73% of your babies born to unmarried families. so i think king would say wait a minute. you are a testament to my dream, barack obama, but we need to ....
