Reinforce our young men. and give them the sense that their country cares about them and values them and is willing to invest in them. trayvon martin and jordan davis parents were in the audience as the president spoke, and this issue is without question a critical one. the president says this goes to the heart of why he ran for president. i want to bring back in lisa bloom, who is a legal analyst for avo.com for the purposes of this conversation, she is best-selling author. and this is her latest work called suspicion nation: the inside story of the trayvon martin injustice and why we continue to repeat it. lisa, i ve been reading through the book, and it s always remarkable when you get some time to digest and two years since all of this began has been i think helpful. but at the same time, we still have cases being repeated that are somewhat similar. there is profiling. without relitigating the case, because you do an excellent job of going into why the ....

Prosecutors botched this completely. this has been your life. you have been in the law for a long time. you have been in and out of hundreds of courtrooms. so much has come down to profiling. and that it s wrong. at the same time, we are brought up to say keep your wits about you. if you see something, say something. and i don t know what americans are supposed to think anymore. are they supposed to just act as though nothing is going on around them? are they supposed to feel bad if they sense there is something going wrong? because for a lot of people, they don t quite know what to do with the results that they re seeing in courtrooms. so i think you re hitting on what really is the essence of my book. and i called it suspicion nation because so many of us feel this awkwardness in talking about race or the suspicions about our neighbors, as george zimmerman was so suspicious of trayvon martin, calling him a real suspicious guy. and that s how the whole incident began. and ultimate ....

Had been in the community six months before. he had nothing to do with. and the prosecutors did that rise to their feet and say what does that have to do with trayvon martin. so they allowed the defense to own the race issue in a very illogical manner. the judge rule that had they couldn t talk about racial profiling, just the word profiling. which made no sense. the prosecution should have argued their evidence that all of the calls that zimmerman made in the six months prior to the shooting about suspicious people in the neighborhood were about african-americans. 100%. you don t get statistics like that very often. second half of the book broadens it out beyond this one case. in looking back at the way that this case was tried, your own experience in the courtroom, what does this mean for us as a country when we re prosecuting cases in an era of very liberal gun laws? that give a lot of latitude to the person who pulled the ....

Weight of trayvon martin s death is on her shoulders. and when she tells the story of what went on not only during deliberations, but during the three weeks of sequestration, i was shocked. i mean, i think it raises serious questions about whether about whether racial profiling was going on in the jury room. how cruel the five white women were on that jury to maddy, how they demeaned her, how they mocked the way she smoke. it was microcosm of how what this case was about. give me an example. what do you mean mocked her and treated her isolated her and treated her differently? did she give you examples? yes, yes. and i have the examples in the book. for example, she referred to ramen noodles as roman noodles. they all laughed at her. oh, maddy, you don t know how to talk. one of them was allowed to bring her dog in for nine hours on a weekend because she was lonely. maddy wanted to bring in her 3-month-old infant, and she was denied that on the ground that ....

Surprised that the epicenter was in arizona. protesters turned out at this weekend s diamondbacks game calling on major league baseball to move next year s all-star game out of arizona. this just one sign the whole state is bracing for the start of arizona s tough new immigration law, senate bill 1070, scheduled to take effect thursday. the law would require police who are making routine stops to check someone s immigration status if there is reasonable suspicion to believe the person may be undocumented. with senate bill 1070, known nationally as the papers please bill, arizona was once again in the national spotlight for crafting the nation s toughest bill targeting undocumented immigrants. critics call the bill an invitation for open discrimination. calling it racial profiling. president obama said it, undermined the basic notion of fairness. ....
