RELIGIOUS leaders should stay behind the pulpit and leave science to lead the way in the country’s efforts to vaccinate the population against Covid-19 as their posturing may discourage uptake of the vaccines, medical professionals have said.
This comes amid revelations that some churches have been stocking up so-called anointing oil to sell to their followers once Government relaxes the current Covid-19 regulations, which restrict gatherings to only 50 people.
It also comes as the leader of UFIC prophet Emmanuel Makandiwa has since the outbreak of the pandemic been reassuring his followers that they will be “spared” from the virus through prayer and divine protection.

A CLINICAL officer at Mpilo Central Hospital has been arrested for allegedly masquerading as a doctor to patients at his private practice in the city centre.
Police arrested Watson Mpala (67) at Mpilo on Thursday after Health Professions Authority (HPA) officials reported him to the police.
Part of the HPA’s mandate is to serve the public interest on health matters.
National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the professional body was tipped by some nurses about Mpala’s claims to patients that the was a medical doctor.
“The HPA inspectors went to Mpilo Central Hospital after receiving a complaint from the Nurses Council of Zimbabwe that this man was masquerading as a medical doctor. After checking they confirmed that the suspect was not a doctor. Doctors attend to patients, examine and recommend them for operations and other things. This is what HPA officials are alleging. PROMINENT Bulawayo physician Dr Cherifa Sururu succumbed to Covid-19 at Mater Dei Hospital yesterday night.
Dr Sururu, who had several surgeries across Bulawayo and was one of the pioneers in Zimbabwe to major in family medicine, studied at the University of Zimbabwe.
His mentor, Mpilo Central Hospital acting chief executive officer Professor Solwayo Ngwenya said the medical fraternity had lost a dedicated and hard worker who will be missed by many families in Bulawayo.
“I had known him for quite some time, first as a junior at medical school in Harare, then he came to Mpilo to do his post graduate rotations and was my student. He was mentored here at Mpilo until he became a specialist family physician some years ago and we are proud to say he worked so hard to save many lives,” said Prof Ngwenya.
