Politicians divided on return of international students
Six months ago,
University World News published my article, “Could Australia be the student mobility comeback kid?”, where I gave a very upbeat assessment of the prospects for Australia’s inbound international student recruitment. But the only way you can be a comeback kid is to get off the canvas when you’ve been knocked to the floor. At the moment, Australia is looking like it is down and out for the full count.
There were warning signs as far back as April 2020, when Prime Minister Scott Morrison told a press conference: “If they [international students] are not in a position to support themselves, then there is the alternative for them to return to their home countries.”

The United Nations has invited Professor Sir Hilary Beckles, Vice-Chancellor of The University of the West Indies (The UWI), to serve as an expert for its “Futures of Higher Education Project”.
Led by the UNESCO International Institute for Higher Education in Latin America and the Caribbean (UNESCO-IESALC), the project is intended to “generate innovative and visionary ideas about the purpose and functions of higher education.”
The invitation to Sir Hilary from Francesc Pedró, UNESCO-IESALC Director, states, “you will have the opportunity to share your ideas and wisdom” while “stimulating creative and imaginative thinking and ideas about the futures of higher education from multiple and global perspectives.”
