I spent April of 2020 living with my aunt and uncle in Oakland. After my East Coast liberal arts university unceremoniously evicted its students, I was faced with a dilemma: return home to San Diego and possibly infect my grandmother in the process, or stay on campus until the summer and hope things end up OK by then. Luckily, my extended family presented me with a third option, and I was able to finish my senior year in the comfort of their guest room.
School, however, took on a distanced-learning model well before I had settled in. Those anthropology major requirements weren’t going to wait on my emotional well-being although my professors were incredibly accommodating, thank goodness, despite administrative nonchalance.
