BREAKING: UI VC: Senate summons emergency meeting, may extend tenure of Acting VC

The Senate of the University of Ibadan has summoned an emergency meeting, DAILY POST has gathered.
DAILY POST gathered that the meeting which is billed to take place on Monday was summoned in order to consider the elongation of the tenure of the Acting Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Babatunde Ekanola, though some of the members of the Senate are already kicking against the elongation.
Our correspondent gathered from sources within the university that Ekanola’s six months tenure is due to lapse on May 31st, 2021.
Our correspondent recalls that Ekanola was appointed in December 2020 for the period of six months after crisis erupted over the appointment of a new Vice Chancellor of the institution. ....

Who cares whether the VC is an Ibadan indigene or not?
The Minister of Education must revisit this issue quickly. If he waits till the end of the tenure of the current Chairman of Council before the University gets a substantive Vice Chancellor, it would be correctly assumed that Abuja has imposed the politics of godfatherism on the country’s premier University.  The University’s alumni have also been too quiet.

Established in 1948 as a campus of the University College, London, somewhere around Eleiyele in Ibadan, the University of Ibadan as it later became known when it assumed an independent status in 1962, has the history of Nigeria, its greatness and challenges written into every grain of sand, every piece of grass, every sound in its chambers, the minutest echo in its premises so much that any encounter with the University of Ibadan is an encounter with a piece of history. It is Nigeria’s first university. It has produced some of the brightest minds that Nigeria can ever boast of, and has served the country as a factory for the training of generations of skilled workers. Ex-VC: Why appointment of UI vice chancellors is always problematic

The immediate past Vice Chancellor (VC) of the University of Ibadan (UI), Professor Idowu Olayinka, said the UI VC selection process had always been marred with conflicts of interest that had made the process tough and competitive from time immemorial.
Olayinka stated this in an interview with newsmen in Ibadan on Monday on the various speculations that have delayed the selection process of the 13th VC of the institution.
He said there were so many speculations on the selection process not only in the recent time but it had been an age-long phenomenon that has led to the use of various antics by interested parties. ....
