Bangladesh needs to reduce the cost of doing business locally to be more competitive globally in the post-LDC era as the country will face duties on exports because of the erosion of trade privileges, said a noted economist yesterday.

As tenure of vice-chancellors (VCs) of 12 public universities is going to end soon, many pro-government teachers are now lobbying the government high-ups to get appointed as VC.
The aspiring teachers have started lobbying the policymakers at the Education Ministry and Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) for getting appointment to the universities.
The post of vice-chancellor of a public university is equivalent to a full secretary of the government. This position is also very attractive in terms of dignity.
Sources at the Education Ministry and University Grants Commission (UGC) said almost all the 12 universities will get new VCs as the government’s policymakers took a decision in principle that they will not appoint any person for over two terms. ....

BCL men to get top priority for univ jobs

Rajshahi University Vice-Chancellor Prof M Abdus Sobhan has assured Chhatra League men that they would get the highest priorities in getting jobs at the university.
Prof Sobhan, while talking to a group of BCL leaders who kept him confined to his residence on the university campus demanding jobs at the university, also said BCL men would not miss jobs at the university.
The Daily Star obtained an audio clip of the conversation in which he was assuring the protesting BCL men in the early hours of January 12.
The BCL men confined RU VC, two pro-vice-chancellors and the proctor to the VC s residence on January 11. ....
