A former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Legon, Emeritus Professor George Benneh has died. He died Thursday, February 11, at his East Legon residence in Accra.
He was 87 years old.
A family spokesperson who confirmed the news to Graphic Online stated that funeral arrangements would be announced later. Prof George Benneh served as Minister of State in the SMC2 regime, the AFRC regime and in the 3rd Republic.
He held portfolios including Lands and Natural Resources, Fuel and Power and served as Minister for Finance in the Limann Government. Prof Benneh was awarded the “Star of Volta” by President John Agyekum Kufuor and is also a Papal Knight of the Catholic Church.

A duplicate docket on Professor Emmanuel Yaw Benneh a law lecturer who was murdered at Agyriganor has been forwarded to the Attorney General’s Department for advice.
Inspector Ebenezer Teye-Okuffo, who is leading the Prosecution, said the Police was therefore waiting for directives from the AG’s office.
Two suspects namely Ebenezer Quaisie and Opambour Agya Badu Nkansah are being held for their involvement in the murder of the law lecturer.
At the Kaneshie District Court, Mr Larbi Amoah, counsel for Opambour lamented over the kind of treatment being meted out to his client who had undergone surgery.
Mr Amoah said after Opambour’s surgery he was to go for wound dressing every three days but this was not being done.

A former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Professor George Benneh, who is 86 years old, frail, wheelchair-bound and can hardly talk, insisted on casting his ballot today, Monday, 7 December 2020, in the ongoing general elections.
His wife, Mrs Adelaide Benneh, told the media that Prof Benneh, despite his ill health, is very aware of happenings around him and expressed interest in exercising his franchise.
Mrs Benneh, who assisted her husband to the polling station, said: “He knows what is going on. He is very clear. He knows everything. He can decide on what to do, so, when he expressed the idea that he wanted to come, I helped him to come”.
