Planning for new jail is being rushed unnecessarily

I would like to thank Commissioner Hartman for encouraging people in his April 20 letter to the editor to attend the public meeting on April 26 at 6 p.m. in the county annex building at 215 E. 9th St. to hear about the planning for a new jail. I also encourage attendance by everyone.
Iâve been attending some of the meetings on this topic, including the recent public meeting about proposed changes to Community Corrections, which featured significant opposition to those changes. From what Iâve seen, this process is being rushed unnecessarily. Nuance and specifics seem to be missing from the Commissionersâ approach. Assuming there was thorough programming done prior to building Community Corrections, the 52-bed count was determined to be an appropriate number for DeKalb County. That it was âunder utilizedâ during its first year does not take into account the pandemic circumstances, nor that it is meant to be adequate for perhaps a 30-pl ....

On Wednesday the list of those eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine expanded once again.
On it were more ‘public-facing’ workers.
Approximately 80% of the state’s population is eligible.
According to the state’s website here’s who can sign up for the vaccine:
Individuals Age 60 and older who reside in New York
First Responder or Support Staff for First Responder Agency
Fire
Local Fire Service, including firefighters and investigators (professional and volunteer)
Police and Investigations
SUNY Police
City, Town, and Village Police Departments
Transit of other Public Authority Police Departments
State Field Investigations, including DMV, SCOC, Justice Center, DFS, IG, Tax, OCFS, SLA ....

COVID-19 Vaccine: What's the Deal?

New York State officials are hopeful they will get more COVID vaccine later this week. They have already administered 88 percent of the doses they have received.
The city is expecting 107,825 resupply doses this week. NYC will have the capacity to vaccinate 500,000 people per week, the mayor said, once supplies are replenished.
250,000 doses are on their way to New York State this week with New York City allotted 107,000 of those doses.
Mass vaccination sites were set to open this week, but NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio confirmed Monday that the openings are now on hold. When it comes to other sites, like the state-run Javits Center, there are some appointments still available, but very few considering current demand and the pace at which the state has been vaccinating New Yorkers. Also, SUNY Potsdam Field House and Plattsburgh International Airport still have appointments available. ....
